Ammonites are an extinct group of marine invertebrate animals in the subclass Ammonoidea of the class Cephalopoda. They were marine predators, related to the squid and octopus, with tentacles used for capturing prey. They had no vertebrae and were protected by a hard shell. Ammonites first appeared during the Devonian period and went extinct 65 million years ago.
