Agate is the banded form of the mineral Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline form of Quartz. It forms in nodules rather than crystals and as the lining of geodes.
Fun FYI: Agates were a source of playing marbles. Marbles usually earn their nickname based upon what they look like, what they're used for, or the material used to make them. For example, "aggies" are marbles that are made from agate.
